meeting update

Thanks to those that showed up to the meeting last night: Tammy, Amy, Donna, Gary, Leslie, Gary Skan, Freddie, Bud, Ron, Julie, Jarod, Willy, Randy, and Mike.

For those of you who did not make it here are some topics that were discussed:

* some kids are not wearing proper uniforms, if seen please report to either Julie, Mike or Dana. We will be looking into possibly an alternate uniform option for them next year.

* Keep checking the blog to confirm assignments, Julie will have it posted by Sunday night. Please make an effort to communicate with your partner just so each of you know you are aware of your assignment for the upcoming week. Communicate if you are going to be late. A contact sheet was handed out, if you need one emailed to you then contact Julie.

* There are have been playsite issues for East and South in regards to court lines. They should have been solved by now.

* October 15th: whomever officiates the South/Service match please allow the C and JV matches to wear the pink shirts with the numbers only on the front. They are doing a breast cancer benefit and have permission from ASAA to have a modified jersey. Varsity will be in their normal uniform. Officials have a choice to wear a pink shirt for the jv match, but both must agree to wear pink. For the varsity match, you must wear your white polo shirt since the teams are in normal uniform. If a pink ball is used then the ball must have a NFHS logo on it. If they use an all pink ball then they must provide you with approval from ASAA. Ill be contacting the coaches to prevent confusion on this.

* Evaluations have been completed on a few officials. My goal is to get to all of you at least once.
Evals will be emailed to you.

* While evaluating, I've observed a common habit by the down official not being aware of all libero exchanges. In most cases the down official had their back turned while the exchange occurred. Please back away from the court during a dead ball to observe the exchanges and if you do not hear a verbal from the libero tracker you may want to glance over that they are recording the exchange.

* Middle School Season: I will email you Holly Odegard's email. She is the coordinator and assignor for middle school volleyball. Matches are usually 2 sets and have a time limit of 30 or 45 minutes and they begin at 2pm. Dates and locations of the jamborees can be found on the Anchorage School District website. They are only using officials for the JV and Varsity competitions.

* ASAA will be having a board meeting in early October where they may consider my pay-rate increase request for regions and state. I asked for an increase from 60 to 75 per match.

* The state tournament for the next 3 years will be out in Wasilla at the Menard Recreational Center. ASAA will provide pay for driving out there, a hotel, and per diem for food.

* State and regional post season selection of officials begins with Julie submitting all officials that are in good standing with AVOA (all of you) and the region coaches then select their top five. Selections are notified and you can either accept or decline. Hopefully, you will accept as it is quite an honor to be selected and your officiating talents recognized.

* If parents approach you at anytime during a match, please be as professional as possible. Some just want to ask you about rules, but if the conversation becomes heated then end the confrontation and be on your way. If need be, get the coach or the gym manager to deal with the parent.

* If interested in becoming USAV please contact Willy who will be doing a clinic in October.

Sequin Headbands

Just a quick note to all AVOA officials in regards to sequin headbands.

Rule 4-1-6 states: Hair devices made of a soft material or unadorned bobby pins and unadorned flat clips, no longer than 2 inches, may be worn. Hair adornment made of soft material and no more than 2 inches wide may be worn.

As such, given that the sequins on these headbands are very pliable (bendable), the interpretation is that these hair devices are legal and allowed under the NFHS rules for 2010.

This applies as well to headbands decorated with glitter.

USAV Officials Clinic

If you are interested in officiating ASA or club tournaments you will need to be USAV certified. A clinic is being held on Sunday, September 27th from 12:00 to 3:00 at the Midnight Sun Gym.

The fees this year will be in 2 parts: $20 to AVOA (due at the clinic) and $37 will be paid when you register yourself with USAV (soon to be set up). The $37 covers your USAV membership fee, extended insurance coverage, and a background check.

USAV is requiring all officials and coaches to be background checked through their company.

Reminder - Head Coach can stand

Another quick reminder - the new rule this year in NFHS allowing the head coach to stand (during a live ball) is restricted to an area bounded by the extension of the attack line and the extension of the end line. This area also should never encroach within six feet of the sideline. I will be reminding coaches of these boundaries as well, but I wanted our group to be a bit more proactive in monitoring coach's adherence to this new rule. I've witnessed coaches standing well beyond the extension of the end line during play which is not within the scope of the new rule. As Dana Aasland reminded me , coaches can approach the sideline during a dead ball only.

Region IV Pre-Match protocol reminder

The question has again been raised since the clinic as to the prematch protocol for Region IV (Anchorage/Eagle River) matches.

To review, as per NFHS rules the Home Team shall designate their team bench for the first set of the match.

The visiting team will call the original coin toss AND shall have the first timed warm up period. The home team will have the second warm up period. This is regardless of who wins the coin toss and who elects to serve first.

I have just returned from the Regional Volleyball Commissioner meetings and they are requiring background screenings for all officials who work junior tournaments. On a good note - my request for a PAVO grant to cover expenses for Steve Thorpe has been accepted. PAVO is giving us the full amount - $2500. So please make every effort to be at his clinic.

2008 Certification Packets Ready

Like last year, I will have packets available for adult officials to pick up at the Dimond Athletic Club. Bring $55 (I prefer checks written out to ASAA) for the testing materials or $62 if you want a case book - which is such a lovely read.

The clinic with Steve Thorpe is still a go - only now UAA has scheduled a match on that same night. Willy and Freddie are scheduled to officiate the match and we might throw in Cathie as a R2, but I need to know how the gals will get paid for that and need to talk to Steve on details. Plan on a clinic at 5:30 in the same conference room then go to the match and then do a post-match clinic afterward. Basically, we are squeezing out all volleyball knowledge from Steve.

On a happy note, UAA is assisting AVOA on the hotel accomodations for Steve.

Once again Marc Blau and I are trying to arrange for a clinician to come up and hold a clinic. This year we are trying to get an individual to do a clinic but also work the UAA Invitational so that we can observe their calling and he can evaluate us and make the most out of a learning opportunity. Please keep the night of Thursday, August 28th open for a classroom clinic and also plan on attending all the matches, and especially the one he works at the tournament.

The season is over and I thank all of you for a great season. As usual you all showed up for your commitments and represented AVOA well. Special thanks for letting me know ahead of time any conflicts with your assignments and a huge thank you to those who filled in. I have e-mailed all of your worklists for review before I send it into Randy. If there are mistakes, now is the time to figure it out. If you need me to send again, I can. Thanks again. I hope to get everyone paid around December 20th - it just depends on the school district.

Middle School Volleyball

Normally we use the High School kids to work these matches, but they have decided to have their first 2 jamborees on Oct. 30th and Nov. 1st starting at 1:30 and ending at 7:00 or 7:30. I need 13 officials to cover all these matches and it pays about $20 per match which are 1 to 20 for round robin and about $25 for the 2 best of 3 bracket play. An easily $150+ night. Hair clips

Got the chance to work all levels this weekend. The competition looks pretty even so don't expect fast matches this season. As I worked the JV and C team matches I noticed lots of metal hair clips so be on the lookout. Also, keep an eye on Libero replacements taking place in front of the attack line - usually happend when the front row player was going in. I plan to post the first weeks assignments by tomorrow. I advised the Bartlett JV coach to use the proper line-up form, but other then that everyone was using the new form.

Joan Powell Clinic

Joan Powell will be presenting an officiating clinic for AVOA on Wednesday, August 29th from 5-9pm at the UAA student center. The conference room is downstairs across from the Subway - for more specific directions contact Dana or Julie. Please all attend this free clinic and get another perspective on officiating volleyball.

Cordova and Valdez Needs Officials

Valdez has a 9 team Varsity tournament the weekend of September 15th - you would have to leave Friday or even Thursday night and get back on Sunday. They say they will provide airfare, lodging, and perdiem for food $35 a day. Pool play is round robin 1 game to 25 and bracket play is best of 3. They also may have a few home matches that need covered. DAtes????

I will be getting into contact with Cordova again this year to see when they need officials - not sure if they need 2 at a time or 1

Let me know if you are willing to travel to these places, first come first serve. I will basically get you in touch with the powers that be there and you can communicate on your own. Hopefully they will let me know dates to pass on to you.
